Shannon Airport’s new winter schedule and the addition of 200 extra flights is “an achievement”, according to Seán Kelly MEP. “It is great to see Shannon Airport add 200 extra flights to its winter schedule. Expanding flight offerings carries a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond its runways. Further connectivity injects an economic stimulus into the local region. More flights mean increased tourism for the West and South West of the country. It is another important step in the evolution of Shannon Airport,” MEP Kelly said.

Mr Kelly emphasised the importance of continued investment in regional airports: “This should be one of many steps; in my view, both Cork and Shannon airports should receive more Government funding and their capacity better utilized rather than just further developing Dublin Airport. We will hopefully see more business routes to northern Europe from Shannon in the near future too”.

“It is extremely encouraging to see investment pour into Shannon Airport over the last number of years. The pandemic clearly was a difficult time for regional airports; however, the fast pace of the recovery has exceeded many expert expectations. In 2022, over 1.51 million passengers passed through the airport. This translates to a 300% increase on 2021 figures, and an 88% recovery of 2019 passenger levels. This quick return to form should be commended”, Kelly added.
