The focus of an MEP’s policy work is the areas covered by their committees. There are 22 committees in the European Parliament which cover all areas of EU competence. Each committee is made up of MEPs from a variety political groups and countries.
When a new law is proposed to the European Parliament, the relevant committee considers the proposal and works on any amendments it thinks are necessary. The compromise reached by the committee is then voted upon by all MEPs.
I am a member of 3 committees: Industry, Research and Energy, International Trade, and Constitutional Affairs.
The European Parliament engages with countries that are outside of the EU through delegations. I am a member of both the Delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Delegation for relations with South Africa.
