As the agricultural community faces the challenges brought on by an extended and harsh winter, Sean Kelly, MEP for Ireland South, supports the need for the implementation of a comprehensive fodder support scheme.

“In light of the exceptionally long and wet winter that has burdened our farmers, it is imperative that we prioritize their well-being and provide them with the necessary support,” stated Kelly. “The proposal for a comprehensive fodder support scheme would be an important step in addressing the financial strain and hardships endured by our agricultural community.”

The prolonged housing of livestock due to adverse weather conditions has inflicted significant challenges on farmers, leading to cash flow constraints and delays in essential farm activities. Kelly emphasized the need for inclusive support that encompasses all farming sectors.

“It is essential that any forthcoming scheme acknowledges the diverse needs of our farmers, spanning across dairy, beef, sheep, and tillage sectors,” remarked Kelly. “Exclusionary measures, such as those witnessed in previous schemes, are counterproductive to the overarching goal of fostering resilience within our agricultural industry.”
