Ireland-South MEP Sean Kelly has commended leader of the European People’s Party Group Manfred Weber on his nomination for Commission president this week.

“Manfred is a good friend of Ireland. He came to Ireland to visit the border earlier this year and supports us 100% regarding Brexit.”

“He received overwhelming support in the Spitzenkandidat vote and would make an excellent Commission president,” said Mr. Kelly, speaking from the EPP Congress in Helsinki yesterday.

“Manfred showed his integrity and experience at the EPP Congress this week. As chairman of the EPP Group he has worked very hard to address the issues faced by European citizens.”

“Next year heads of state on the European Council will nominate the lead candidate, which will then be followed by a final vote in Parliament.”

“The Commission president will have to lead the way for a strong, united Europe. Having worked with Manfred closely in Parliament, I know he is the man for the job.”

“I would also like to express my condolences to Alexander Stubb, and commend him on a very impressive campaign.”
