MEP for Ireland South and former GAA President, Seán Kelly, has welcomed the opening of the 2018 round of the Sports Capital Programme this week and is encouraging clubs to apply and avail of the opportunity it presents. The Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament confirmed that registration opens this Friday 7th September at 9am until Friday 19th October. Applications can be made via the website: www.sportscapitalprogramme.ie.

“The programme provides a brilliant chance for clubs to get vital funding and to improve facilities for their members. I encourage clubs to ensure that they don’t miss out on this opportunity – get your registration done as soon as possible,” Mr Kelly said, speaking from Brussels this week.

The programme will mean an additional €40 million in sports infrastructure funding around the country:

“Having been heavily involved in sports clubs all my life, I am very conscious of the challenges met by clubs in getting funds for the facilities they need. Funds are often raised solely through the hard work and commitment of members who offer up their time to volunteer and fundraise. The Sports Capital programme can be a crucial support to club members’ work and enhance the experience provided by the club to its members.

“Following a thorough review of last year’s round of the Sports Capital Programme there will be some important changes in how applications are assessed, to minimise the number of invalid applications. I am delighted that the 2018 programme will also give greater priority to applications from disadvantaged areas and projects that promote the sharing of sports facilities with the wider community.

“Sports clubs and organisations are at the very heart of our communities. They play an essential role in Irish society and contribute significantly to our physical wellbeing. The Sports Capital programme has brought a great increase in the number of people getting involved in clubs, and I am very pleased that this will continue to be the case going forward.”

Mr Kelly also praised the efforts of fellow Kerryman Brendan Griffin TD on his good work in this area.

Applications for the 2018 Sports Capital Programme must be submitted prior to the deadline of 5pm, Friday 19th October 2018.
