Seán Kelly MEP and leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament has strongly condemned plans announced by the Israeli government to expand its military operations in Gaza and displace Palestinians from their homeland. They are urging the EU to call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and end to the aid blockade. MEP Kelly expressed serious concern for the humanitarian impact on people in Gaza.

“All global leaders, and those in leadership in the EU, should condemn this latest pronouncement by the Israeli government, and insist on an immediate ceasefire and an end to the blocking of food and medical supplies to Gaza”.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is absolutely dire. Innocent children, ordinary women and men living in Gaza are suffering inhumane conditions. The UN and various aid agencies have been warning of the seriousness of the situation for months. Famine is a very real risk now.

“The latest Israeli plans follow the outrageous Trump proposal to displace all Palestinians and make a “Riviera” out of their land. It is essential that world leaders stand up against the slaughter in Gaza. We must defend human rights, human dignity and the rule of law – all core EU values, which are being breached by disproportionate Israeli action in Gaza.

“The immediate and unconditional release of all hostages taken by the terrorist group Hamas must remain a top priority.

“Unfortunately, consensus at EU level on other measures in response to the conflict remains difficult due to divergent positions across Member States. Yet, even though there are obviously differing views on the terrible situation, the European Parliament has declared its support for a negotiated two-state solution as the most viable path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

“Clearly, the latest Israeli government plans will only result in more loss of life, more suffering and would put an end all hopes for any future two state solution or a diplomatic end to the conflict.

“The EU must use its full diplomatic weight to push for a ceasefire and sustainable peace, grounded in human rights and international law,” MEP Kelly said.
