The European Commission has today (Wednesday) announced the “Fit for 55” legislative package, which will fundamentally overhaul the EU’s climate policy architecture and put the EU on track to deliver on its 2030 climate target of reducing emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels.

MEP for Ireland South and Fine Gael’s leader in the European Parliament, Sean Kelly, has welcomed the announcement by the Commission.

“This is the largest single batch of legislation to tackle climate change proposed by any government anywhere, designed to update EU laws to meet the new 2030 emissions reduction target of 55%.”, said Mr. Kelly.

“Whether we like to accept it or not, this is a make-or-break decade in terms of taking action. The targets are ambitious, but it is now incumbent upon policy makers, industry, businesses, civil society and even the individual citizen to ensure we meet them. We all have a role to play”, he added.

“This package will be the defining feature of this mandate, and I look forward to working with colleagues across the EU Institutions and all stakeholders”
