Sean Kelly, MEP for Ireland South and Former President of the GAA, has said that the League of Ireland’s (LOI) soaring popularity is clear justification for significant investment in stadiums and facilities.
Speaking at a gathering of the European Club Association (ECA) in Brussels —attended by senior football executives, European policymakers, and key stakeholders in the game—Kelly pointed to record-breaking attendances and rising fan engagement as proof that the league is on an upward trajectory.
“For years, the League of Ireland faced financial instability, struggling with outdated facilities and modest attendance,” Kelly stated. “Now, post-pandemic especially, we’re seeing sell-out stadiums, a growing fan base, and a renewed pride in domestic football. With this success, the case for investment has never been stronger.”
The ECA dinner provided a platform to showcase how the LOI has transformed in recent years. Kelly pointed to the unprecedented demand for tickets as a clear indicator of the need for improved infrastructure.
“Look at the upcoming Dublin Derby at the Aviva—set to break all-time attendance records for a league match in Ireland. Clubs are now facing a positive problem—demand for away tickets is far exceeding supply. That tells us that the league is no longer a risky investment. It’s thriving, and now is the time to ensure its facilities match that success.”
Kelly emphasised that this is not just a short-term trend but a long-term shift in Irish football. “The league’s resurgence is being driven by passionate supporters and key figures like Stephen Kenny and Damien Duff have further increased the profile of the league. For years, Irish talent developed abroad. Now, the LOI is emerging as a real alternative for talent, and we must build on this momentum.”
He also stressed the broader benefits that improved infrastructure would bring: “This is about more than football—it’s about jobs, community development, and strengthening Ireland’s connection to European football. Upgrading stadiums and facilities will enhance the fan experience, create economic opportunities, and ensure the league continues to grow.”
“Football is more than a game—it’s culture, community, and identity. The League of Ireland’s revival is proof that, with the right backing, domestic football can thrive. The demand is there, the passion is there, and now, the justification for investment is undeniable,” MEP Kelly said.
