As EU-India Free Trade Agreement negotiations reach a crucial stage, Sean Kelly, MEP for Ireland South and Member of the Delegation for relations with India, has called for a pragmatic, forward-thinking approach to finalising the deal.“There is a rare momentum in the EU-India relationship right now,” Kelly stated. “We must not squander this moment with rigid or ideological positions. The global economy is changing fast. What’s needed is a deal grounded in reality – not rhetoric.”
With almost half of the agreement’s chapters reportedly closed and both sides pushing for a final deal by year’s end, Kelly welcomed the progress but cautioned against overreach. “We know agriculture remains politically sensitive, particularly for India,” he said. “There is no benefit in insisting on what’s clearly a red line. That kind of inflexibility would do more harm than good.”
Kelly stressed that the EU must see India as more than just a market. “This is not just about exports – it’s about a strategic partnership with the world’s largest democracy. If we want to be serious about diversification away from authoritarian economies, then we have to treat India as a partner with equal stakes in the outcome.”
Referring to recent remarks from Indian officials, Kelly noted a growing realism on both sides. “India is showing flexibility. The EU must meet that with the same maturity. Progress doesn’t mean agreeing on everything – it means knowing where compromise strengthens, not weakens, our position.”
Kelly concluded by calling for political leadership over procedural delay. “We can get this done. But only if we remember that trade deals are not exams to pass – they’re partnerships to build. Europe must show that it can lead with confidence and humility at once.”
“The world is watching. Let’s show them that Europe and India can rise to the challenge – not retreat into old habits.”
