EU Parliament’s Australia Chair seeks swift ratification of new trade deal
MEP for Ireland South and Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Australia and New Zealand (DANZ), Seán Kelly, has today welcomed the conclusion of negotiations on the EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement, describing it as a timely and strategic boost for Europe’s economy.
Welcoming the announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Mr Kelly said the agreement comes at a critical moment for Europe as it seeks to strengthen its global trade footprint and reduce exposure to economic shocks.
“This is a significant and timely agreement for Europe. At a moment when global trade is under pressure, the EU is demonstrating that it can still deliver ambitious deals that open markets, support jobs and strengthen our position in the global economy.”
Mr Kelly said the deal would materially improve access for European exporters while supporting long-term economic resilience.
“For European businesses, this agreement will cut costs, remove barriers, and unlock new opportunities in a dynamic and growing market. It will support key sectors such as agri-food, manufacturing, and services, while also making it easier for European companies to invest and operate in Australia.”
He also highlighted the importance of the agreement in securing supply chains and supporting Europe’s industrial base.
“Strengthening ties with reliable partners like Australia is essential for Europe’s long-term competitiveness. This agreement improves access to critical raw materials and helps reduce strategic dependencies, which is increasingly important in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable global economy.”
Mr Kelly concluded by calling for momentum to be maintained as the agreement moves to the next stage.
“The work now turns to ratification. There is a real opportunity here to deliver tangible benefits quickly, and the European Parliament stands ready to engage constructively to bring this agreement into force without delay.”
