Sean Kelly MEP and Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Australia and New Zealand has said that the parliament is ready to progress the EU-Australia trade deal as soon as possible. MEP Kelly’s comments come as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that negotiators are close to concluding the new agreement.

In a letter to Member State leaders ahead of Thursday’s European Council meeting, President von der Leyen confirmed that the EU and Australia were in the “final stretch” towards concluding the Agreement, which would remove trade barriers, facilitate access to critical raw materials, and “strengthen Europe’s presence in one of the world’s most dynamic economic regions”.

President von der Leyen will visit Australia next week (from March 23-25) and will meet Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, where the Agreement is expected to be finalised.

Speaking in the European Parliament today (Wednesday), MEP Kelly highlighted the importance of the agreement in terms of promoting an ambitious, rule-based trading relationship with international partners.

“This proposed agreement marks a major step forward in deepening the relationship between the European Union and Australia. We are natural partners, united by shared democratic values, a global outlook, and a strong commitment to sustainability. Bringing these negotiations to a successful conclusion sends a clear signal that we are united in our commitment to open, rules-based trade and to strengthening cooperation between like-minded partners.

“At a volatile and uncertain juncture for international trade, this agreement provides an important opportunity for Europe to reinforce its economic resilience, diversify export markets, and secure reliable access to critical raw materials such as lithium and cobalt. This is all essential for a delivering a strong and competitive European economy.”

MEP Kelly also noted the significant opportunities for European exporters that the Agreement would bring.

“The benefits of this agreement are clear. It will open new opportunities for our farmers, SMEs and service providers, ensuring they can compete on a level playing field with those who already benefit from preferential access to the Australian market. This vital agreement will create real, tangible opportunities for European businesses and communities.

He concluded by encouraging EU and Australian leaders to ensure the agreement is signed next week, and the ratification process kicked off as quickly as possible.

“We must now take this opportunity to get the Agreement over the line. Finalising it without delay will send a clear signal that Europe and Australia are ready to take the lead in strengthening open trade, economic resilience and international cooperation in an increasingly uncertain world.

“In the European Parliament, we stand ready to do our part in the ratification process as soon as possible”, he concluded.
