Fine Gael MEP for Ireland South, Sean Kelly has been appointed the new Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

As leader of Fine Gael, MEP Kelly will sit on the Front Bench of the EPP Group, the largest and most influential political group in the European Parliament.  He takes over leadership of Ireland’s largest delegation from Mairead McGuinness MEP, who was recently elected Vice President of the European Parliament.

“Now more than ever, we need strong and influential voices at the heart of decision making in the European Parliament.  Sean Kelly will serve that role on the Front Bench of the EPP Group”, said An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD.

“Sean Kelly MEP’s track record as a two time MEP of the Year and Industry Committee Rapporteur for the General Data Protection Regulation means he is one of the most respected and influential voices in the EPP Group.  His new role as Leader of Fine Gael will mean that Ireland will continue to punch above our weight in terms of influence in this group”, An Taoiseach added.

“I am honoured to become Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament.   I look forward to leading a very strong and talented Fine Gael team in Europe of Mairead McGuinness MEP, Deirdre Clune MEP and Brian Hayes MEP”, said MEP Kelly.

“It will allow Fine Gael to have a strong voice in the EPP Group leadership and will permit me to advocate for issues of key importance to Ireland in terms of jobs and continuing the economic recovery”, he concluded.
